Paint or Wallpaper: Which One Will Last Longer?
This is one tricky question. Most people would have this same question hovering in their mind as they plan to build their own home. After scribbling into several home design magazines and websites, they would still ask the same question up to the last minute of final decision. In most cases, the tie-breaking question is, which one will last longer?
Since we are at recession and cost-cutting is necessary, it's better to come up with smart decisions. This question is a good influencing in decision-making. Unfortunately, it cannot be answered directly because several factors to consider will eventually result to different outcomes.
If you love to oomph your walls with lavish designs and personal touch, wallpapers will definitely feed your excitement. Aside from different patterns such as: floral, prints, geometrical, plaid and textured. More dramatic effects including sequins, beads and ribbons add to the impact. You can even cover unsightly cracks or stains and turn them into one polished finish.
However, any beauty will wither over time if not maintained. Wallpapers are quite difficult to clean. You have to use the proper solution so as not to ruin the brightness of color and texture. If not, your wallpaper won't last that long. Kids armed with pens, crayons and food must not smudge your walls.
If you're residing at humid location, wallpapers are not recommended. Humidity detaches wallpapers from the wall. Eventually, you will observe the sides of the panel peeling off. You can still paste them but it requires patience and effort especially at hard to reach areas. Direct exposure to UV Rays from the sun causes wallpapers to fade quickly. So if you're walls are right in front of huge windows, veranda or balcony, it is not wise to hang wallpapers there.
Another back fire of choosing wall papers is that, when one panel is damaged or stained, you cannot just tear it down and replaced it with any wallpaper pattern. Lucky for you if you have a spare panel with similar pattern, or if you'll find the same pattern at the store. If not, you have no other choice but to buy a new set of wallpaper, tear the old wallpapers down, and replace them.
On the other hand, if you want to consider painting your walls, you can benefit from lower cost and low maintenance. It is recommended to use paint when you have huge walls to cover. Paints evolved much. They are much safer now, some are also odorless. As for aesthetics, professionals can create illusions through paint. By using stencils and airbrush, you can request for your own personalized design. They can stand sunlight and wind as well. However, paint has its own weakness. Choosing the right paint, preparation and procedure-all these contribute to the life of your painted walls. Some paints are prone to chalking, fading, cracks and chips. And if not allowed to dry properly, molds will arise to the surface of the wall.
Deciding between paint and wallpaper is troublesome. But determining which can last longer can help you choose what is best for you. After all, keeping your budget intact is one valid reason, right?
