Ways To Benefit From Public Art
There are many benefits to public art in our city centres, and this article looks at why it's important that we continue to put funding into this activity for the good of people within our society.
Anti-Global
Almost every high street these days has the same shops - a Starbucks, a Game, a John Lewis and so on. This means that a lot of towns have lost their character, with similarities appearing everywhere and not much in the way of them being individual. When places lose their character, their uniqueness, it means that people start to care less about their community, and that is when those who are struggling in society are cut adrift. Public art - pieces such as mistrals or statues - can nip this problem in the bud by ensuring each town centre is unique.
City Centres Are More Attractive
Of course, if you put art in a public space and that art is attractive then it makes the space more so as well. Consequently people will want to spend more time there, and while they are in the city centre there is every chance they will spend time shopping and putting money back into the economy.
Artists Get A Different Canvas
Not every type of art is suited to being in a museum, with larger sculptures or skylars not really being appropriate for being indoors. Consequently artists need to have somewhere for their art to reside, and somewhere for that art to be seen by a lot of people. City centres seem to fit the bill on both accounts, with many able to walk past a piece of art on their daily routine.
Social Benefits
Some art - like graffiti - is considered to be rebellious and anti-community by some people. However, graffiti artists - and this is a huge generalisation - tended to come from more troubled backgrounds and by giving them somewhere to display their art they will feel more included in the community. Art isn't always about creating something that's visibly appealing, very often it's about creating something that challenges our assumptions and graffiti can often do this in new and interesting ways.
As you can see there are many types of art that are appropriate for the city centres and many reasons why we need to have art there, from the aesthetic angle to the social ones. But the art doesn't just stop with new uses of space, many buildings can be considered to be artistic to.
