What is The Gambrel Barn Shed
Just about any backyard storage shed can be called a "barn shed". But to earn that title it is fitting that it should at least look like a barn as well as have some of the storage characteristics that barns have like increased storage and red paint. The gambrel style is one of the iconic styles that epitomizes country farm living. The great thing about this shed style is that it not only looks good, the multi faceted roof is designed to increase the storage capacity of the barn shed. Gambrel barn shed plans have a unique roofline that has 4 roof planes and three ridgelines.
How the roof is angled
What makes the perfect angles for the gambrel roof of a backyard barn shed plan is debatable. It really comes down to what you think looks good. There are two roof pitches on each side of the center ridgeline. The first pitch is very steep and the second is much flatter. The roof framing starts out on the top of the side walls and goes almost straight upward. The pitch for this first roof line is usually between 12 in 6 to 12 in 8. This means that for every twelve inches of rise upward the roof goes in toward the center of the shed 6 to 8 inches. The steeper the roof as it comes off the walls the more storage space is created inside the shed. The second roof pitch goes from an intermediate ridge line over to the center ridge of the shed. This second roof is much shallower of a pitch, usually 6 in 12 to 7 in 12. The two roof planes on each side of the center ridgeline are fairly even in size, it is the pitches of the first and second roof planes on each side of the center ridge that differs.
Why the roof is angled
Gambrel roofs are designed to greatly increase the interior storage space of the barn shed. By using the exterior wall of the shed as a roof it creates extra space inside and also covers the outside. The area inside the roof is used as a loft area for larger barn sheds and used as the head room for the main floor on smaller barn shed plans. On larger shed plans the upper floor level almost doubles the size of the barn shed. This area is almost always a loft area with a ceiling that is not high enough to stand up in.
What it all means for shed plans
The roof is definitely the hardest part of the shed to build. But don't let that scare you off. It is well worth the extra effort. You will get more than your moneys worth out of this shed. Its increased storage capacity and good looks are worth the extra effort.
So if you are looking for a barn shed plan with a huge amount of storage space and the look of a classic american barn then the gambrel is your shed plan. Its timeless beauty will add character to any backyard.
