The constant preaching about eco-this and eco-that can sometimes manifest itself simply as a low buzz on the periphery of the average persons audio range. The crushing environmental guilt can sometimes be too much to bear! But for those rushing off in the opposite direction, here are a few simple and actually maintainable tips to revitalise the garden and make it a more animal and earth friendly domain!
• Compost – Its not hard, honestly, and it provides tasty nutrients for the garden that are quite obviously organically sourced. Composting garden waste using worms is great because the worms continually create tunnels through the compost, encouraging drainage and the easy movement of air.
• Going organic – its a terror-inducing phrase, but can be as simple as creating a compost heap, controlling weeds via natural means (e.g. uprooting them manually and spreading a little compost over the site) and controlling insects via natural means (biological treatments are available online) Of course theres a whole other world of organic gardening to explore too, should the fancy occur.
• Ethically sourced garden furniture, sheds, summer houses, climbing frames, and even garden offices may come at a slightly higher cost, but the world is grateful for the sacrifice. For example, pine or spruce from tree farms is reputed to be of inferior quality (in strength and durability) to the naturally occurring varieties. Look for a source that sustains its stocks through harvesting and replanting of naturally occurring woods.
• Learn about the local ecosystem and try to provide a little of it for the critters. For example, if the locale has an abundance of certain birds, a birdfeeder with their favourite tasty snacks and a few nesting boxes under the eaves of the shed could make a nice little hideaway for them.
