It was July 2014 when our adventure began. We packed up two suitcases, two sport fencing bags, and two backpacks, sold what we could, and left to travel to Dubai. Looking for success and hopes of a dream come true. We had heard that the jobs were plentiful, and that the salaries were something you could enjoy tax-free, plus the benefits. From housing paid, tax-free salary, and sometimes even a car, the draw was so strong for us we decided to leave it all behind. This included our beloved cat, Seven, who was 19-years old and we didn’t feel would make the 20 hour plus flight to our new home.
With tears in our eyes, a heavy heart, but hopes and ideas of what was to come we stepped onto our first flight of the journey. It was long, grueling, and we slept perhaps 20 minutes each out of the 20 plus hour trip, trying to combat jet lag. Getting to our now new home, we took our first cab through Dubai to our hotel for the next 30 days, looking around, and wondering how quickly it would all happen for us.
Fast forward to November of the same year. Our hopes of Dubai had been dashed, with only a few interviews, and a cost of living that was outrageous, we had to make a change. My husband had his TEFL certification, and we began to research a good place to go to next, in hopes of a teaching career for him, and my online work for me.
We still missed our cat, the person who had taken her failed to add us on Skype as they promised, so we couldn’t even get some comfort this way. Instead we had each other, and a drive to try and make something work out of John’s TEFL’s and our desire for success in one way or another.
Talking to a friend from Tampa, who had recently moved to Egypt, she let us know that the opportunities were there, and that we might want to consider the move. The cost of living was much cheaper, and there were indeed jobs online for teaching, and John had a hit on one within the first day of sending out his information. A promise of “when you get here, just give me a callâ€, so it looked like something that might work.
We traded in our tickets and changed them to Cairo, in less than a month, we would make our second move in the matter of less than 6 total months. It was a lot for two older people, who had already given up so much, just to find success. On November 28th, 2014, we landed in Cairo, our friend picked us up from the airport. Funny thing, or not so funny, depending on how you look at it, the day we arrived there had been talk about a revolution happening. Thank goodness nothing took place, and we arrived at our new place safely that night!
Within a matter of a week John had several interviews and many possible jobs, the dreams were once again coming alive in our minds and hearts. It’s been just a few months here now, we have secured an apartment for a year, John has two jobs, one as a teacher, and another one as a lecturer on how to teach Native English as a Native Speaker!!
Though we haven’t got to see the pyramids yet, we are hoping to do that one day soon. We’ve just been so busy from the beginning and are hoping to see even more success come our way this new year!
