In Winter many of us now take a holiday to a ski resort as well as our traditional Summer holidays, and many people now go with their entire family as many ski resorts now offer a wide range of winter pursuits for those that do not feel like going skiing.
A typical winter resort will offer skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating, curling, sledging as well as sleigh rides, sometimes pulled along by husky dogs.
When it comes to downhill skiing you will need to rent some skis, boots and poles, as well as buying a lift pass for the week to get around.
Snowmobiling is great fun indeed and once you have tried it you will probably think about moving to live somewhere cold! It really is addictive and yet with a good guide is very safe to do. You can now even go on snowmobiling holidays for a week or more racing across huge areas of frozen landscapes. It is not a cheap sport to do though and you need to be aware that most often you are responsible for any damage to the sled, which can costs thousands of pounds to repair and will not be covered under your insurance. Great fun but take care!
Ice skating is great fun to do particularly at night on an outside rink, however if you are new to skating then be aware that you will fall over a lot, and may get quite cold, although once you have mastered the knack of ice skating then it really is great fun, and relatively low cost to do, and it is a Winter sport that you can do at home on an indoor rink.
Curling is most often done on areas of ice separate from an ice skating rink, although they both use the same ice, a curling rink would be damaged by people skating over it as it needs to be smooth. Indeed the shoes people wear when curling are smooth, except for a very few spikes on them to stop sliding when needed.
Ski resorts also often offer sledging and sleigh rides in the evening. Sleigh rides pulled by dogs are great fun but can cost a lot of money to go on. Whereas an evenings organised sledging activity is often done at a very low cost. Such evening sledging activities often make use of a ski lift so that you do not have to even walk back uphill with your sledge! Truly the lazy mans version of sledging.
