An automotive circuit tester is a basic tool that everyone should have in their tool bag. If you are just getting started building up a great tool collection, then take a little time to research this one. You will want to make sure that you get the right one for your specific needs.
Basic Facts:
An automotive circuit tester might be found under several different names. They are sometimes called a voltage tester, a test lamp, a test light, or a neon tester. However, those names are all referring to the same kind of tool. You will know that it is a circuit tester if it is a tool made up of two insulated wire probes. It will have a small neon light that is the indicator of whether or not the circuit is getting power. Some models will have a small gauge instead of the light. A circuit tester is used to show you if a circuit has electricity running through it. While different automotive circuit testers all serve the same basic function, there are many different models and options to choose from.
Examples of Automotive Circuit testers:
27000 Circuit Tester. Tool Aid makes great circuit testers. Their 27000 is very heavy duty. It can be used for both 6 and 12 volt systems. The wire is a 5' rubber wire that is rough and flexible.
3630 Circuit Tester. Their 3630 circuit tester is battery powered. It has a lightweight design and will allow you great freedom of movement.
The Lisle 30610 is another impressive circuit tester. It can test up to 12 volts. It has a 12' cord and comes with multiple options for connecting to a ground source.
OTC tools - 3642 truck circuit tester. This tool is specifically designed for a higher voltage and can test between 12 volts and 36 volts. The stainless steel probe is 7". It also features a 24' cord and an extra large clamp.
What to Compare?
- Length of the cord.
- Voltage capability.
- Does it work on a whole array of volt systems or only on specific makes and models of vehicles?
- What kind of clamp does it have?
- Does the cord automatically retract?
- How versatile are the parts. Can they be removed or switched out for something else?
- Does it have the typical LED light or does it have a more detailed gauge?
