As far as newly installed buffalo grass is concerned, most users are unaware of the fact that it has some very serious watering needs. This is why experts suggest that just after the installation; you should provide it proper watering, as in its absence, the grass would not be able to establish itself. Watering it rigorously soon after the installation would have a huge positive impact on the health and it'll continue to flourish for many years to come. According to the experts, post-installation, you should water the buffalo turf at least 2-3 cms, so that the soil of the new lawns becomes well-drenched. They say that at least 7-8 cms of soil should be nicely wet to ensure proper flourishing of the lawn. Let us go through some more watering tips associated with this grass.
Testing the wetness
- After laying turf and watering it, pull back a corner of the buffalo grass and push a screw driver or some other equally sharp tool into the soil.
- It should be pushed inside effortlessly and have moisture along the first 7-8 cms.
- If this has not happened, apply some more water immediately.
Even sprinkle
- During the watering process, be absolutely certain that that the water is evenly sprinkled on all the parts of your new lawns.
- Therefore, it's better that rather than doing it manually, you purchase a water sprinkler system.
Pay attention towards the corners and edges
- Make sure that extra attention is paid towards the corners as well as edges, as they are often missed out during the watering process.
- Because of this, they are especially vulnerable to drying out as the water is not provided in the adequate quantity.
- This is seen equally in buffalo turf as well as couch grass and therefore, you need to be alert about these areas.
Attend the parts around the infrastructure
- One more thing to note is that the areas near the construction like building, etc. dry out faster because water absorbing agents in these areas are much more than anticipated.
- One more reason why these areas experience faster drying-out is that the infrastructure around them reflects heat that vaporises the water, leaving the area dry and wanting more sprinkling.
Prevent runoffs
- After laying turf, you'll observe runoffs occurring in some parts of the turf farms that is mostly because of inadequate water supply.
- The best step to conserve water and ensure adequate soak-in is simply turning off the water supply, as soon as you detect some runoff occurring.
- You can wait for 30 minutes to one hour, depending upon the quantity of the runoff and thereafter, start all over again.
- Repeat this "start and stop process" until correct soil moisture is achieved.
- However, once this happens, make sure that for the next two weeks, you keep the "below turf" soil moist and fully wet with more frequent or at least daily watering.
Some other watering tips for buffalo grass are -
- Water as early in the morning as possible to take advantage of the normal growing cycle.
- Reduce the temperature of the buffalo turf by lightly sprinkling the area in summers.
- Infrequent and deep watering is preferred to frequent and shallow watering.
