Why it's Important to Choose the Right Octane Rating for your Vehicle?
To many drivers, the choice is as simple as selecting the cheapest option. However, choosing the right grade of octane for the unleaded fuel you use to fill your gas tank can actually have a major impact on your vehicle's performance. In order to make a proper decision, there are a few things people should take into account.
It is first important to gain a better understanding of what exactly the octane rating means and how it is determined. Basically, before fuel is ignited with the spark plug, it is injected into the engine and mixed with air. The engine compresses the mixture of air and fuel and needs to remain stable until it is triggered by the spark plug. Otherwise, damage can occur to the engine as a result of energy being released during combustion. The octane rating is essentially a measure of the gasoline's ability to resist premature ignition of the compressed fuel and air. A premium octane rating is usually measured at 91 to 93 octanes, mid-grade at 89 octane, and regular at 87 octane.
In order to choose the right octane rating for your vehicle, be sure to consult with your owner's manual. Auto manufacturers will provide a recommended octane rating that the engine is compatible with and any fuel used should be rated that level or higher.
In older vehicles without variable valve timing or computer controlled timing, using fuel with a higher octane rating than recommended usually doesn't make a difference. So by choosing the lowest grade you can save money without risk of damaging your car. However, in newer or high compression performance vehicles, a higher grade fuel can improve performance. For modern engines equipped with variable timing sensors or computer controlled ignition, the higher octane fuel may improve throttle response and provide more power. Low octane fuel on the other hand may cause your vehicle to feel sluggish, in hot weather especially. Using the minimum recommended grade for these modern engines may be more suitable for commuting, while higher octane will be better for performance driving.
