There are several myths associated with the maintenance and care of custom suits. It is a popular thought that dry cleaning is good for custom suits but it is not so in most cases. One needs to be sure of how these suits need to be cared. A bespoke suit is actually a luxury and it needs a lot of attention to be taken care of.
The maintenance of custom suits is about handling them in the best manner possible. Many factors need to be considered to be incorporated especially when taking care of the bespoke suit:
- Use a lint roller to eliminate any dirt or lint that your suit might have gathered
- It is important to air your custom suits before storing them in the cupboard. This gets rid of the odour which might got on the suits from the outside. Also make sure that you scent them before using them.
- To avoid getting creases on your suit, hang clothes separately especially if there is a jacket and a trouser involved, in the bathroom, Get a hot shower and allow the steam to settle on the suit. Let the suit get steamed in half an hour and then wait for creases to get eased out.
- Remove any thing which might be in your pockets so that those pockets do not get sagged.
- Storing custom suits in plastic bags or even woollen bags allows the cloth fabric to get moisturized and get affected by mildew. Keep them wrapped in paper if you need to place them in the cupboard.
- Hang the custom suits on wooden hangers for maintaining the overall shape of the shoulder pads.
- Dry clean the suit less than twice in a season of three months or four. Do not dry-clean them many times. The process ruins the fabric of custom suits if done repeatedly.
- If your custom suits get some liquid on it or something gets spilled, brush the liquid off. Do not run it off like you would do if liquid gets spilled on other surfaces. Running them off might cause permanent marks and it would be extremely difficult to get rid of those stains anyway.
- Any stains on the custom suit need to be treated immediately without delay using a reliable stain remover. Do read instructions of use and the fabric that the stain remover supports before using them.
- Never separate the jacket and the trouser which is attached to the suit. One won't be able team them up as a suit if there are kept separately as their life diminishes once used independently.
Care of these suits is an extremely important process and needs dedication on the part of the wearer. Always go to a reputed dry cleaner especially when you are thinking of dry-cleaning the suit well. The life of a custom suit is directly proportional with the efforts that you put in to preserve it and the methods that you opt for.
