A shed is a simple, one-storey structure mainly used for storage purpose (though there are other uses as well). There are different materials that are used for making sheds. Choosing the right material for your shed can be tough unless you know the features of each. Here's an overview of some of the main materials, with their pros and cons:
Wood- Wood is one of the most common materials to be used for making sheds. It can add a character and natural charm to the shed. 2 types of wood are mostly used for building sheds:
Natural wood- If you want the natural colour and charm of wood, choose natural wood like cedar, larch, oak or a preservative impregnated pine board. You can also use wood shingles to build your shed. Shingles are small rectangles of wood that are attached to the exterior wall, starting from the bottom and going upwards. They are uniform in size and machine cut that gives them a regular and smooth finish.
Painted finish- If you want a more refined and less rustic look for you shed, use painted finish wood.
- Engineered wood- Made of real wood strand or fibers treated with resins, engineered wood offers beauty, and resistance to moisture. Some engineered wood products are treated with zinc borate to make them resistant to termite damage and fungal decay. Engineered wood is durable and can avoid damage from hard blows, like an errant baseball or football.
Metal- Metal is strong and resilient, but produces a lot of noise during rainfall and can also dent on attacks from baseball or if hit accidentally by a falling branch. There are 2 types of metal that are generally used for making sheds:
Steel- Steel is strong but prone to corrosion. When using steel, consider how you are going to protect it from rust. Some varieties of steel come galvanized (specially provided with paint coatings) that protects it from corrosion.
Aluminium- Aluminium is weaker than steel (hence can dent easily) but is naturally resistant to corrosion.
Vinyl- Vinyl is economical, weather resistant and requires low maintenance. If it fades, it cannot be re-painted, and in case of any damage, repairs can be costly.
Fiber- cement- It is one of the newest type of material used for building sheds. They generally come in sheet forms, and are made from cement, cellulose fibers and sand. It is rigid but can be damaged by large hailstones or baseball attack. It does not rust or rot and colour can be applied on it.
Plastic- Plastic is one of the most common materials used for building sheds. Plastic sheds require low maintenance and can be cleaned easily. Since plastic is very light, transporting the materials and building the shed becomes quite easy.
If you are a resident of New South Wales and are looking forward to building a shed, but are worried about where to get the products and materials from, do not worry. There are many good suppliers that provide all the materials required for building sheds in NSW.
