The hand mower concept is not a new one. Some of the first lawn mowers were hand mowers. While there are many advantages to owning a hand lawn mower, including a cleaner environment, better looking lawn, and physical exercise, there are several disadvantages as well. As such, it is important that one reviews the advantages and disadvantages prior to making the hand mower investment.
One major disadvantage is that hand lawn mowers are difficult to maneuver and operate on long grass. As such, you must commit to mowing your yard at least once per week. If you let the grass grow too long, you will have to go over the same row several times before you notice improvement. In addition, you will have to push the mower much harder due to the mower getting stuck in the long grass.
Another disadvantage associated with hand lawn mowers is that they do not cut tall weeds very well, including dandelions. In fact, many weeds return to standing after being run over with the mower. You could try running over them with the mower again, but you may just succeed in cutting your grass shorter and not cutting the weeds. As such, you may be required to hand cut weeds or remove them in another way.
Cutting your lawn with a hand lawn mower may take longer than when using a power mower. While you may be able to knock out your lawn in under an hour with a power mower, you will be mowing for more than an hour with a hand mower. As such, if you do not have the time to devote to it, the time it takes to use the hand mower may not be worth it for you.
Finally, if you have a large yard, do not invest in a hand lawn mower. Hand lawn mowers are designed to cut less than 8,000 feet of grass. As such, they are best used by those who have smaller yards. If you have a larger yard, you may find yourself mowing for two or three hours.
