What You Need to Know About Wallasey Golf Club?
The Wallasey Golf Club situated on the Wirral peninsula that overlooks the Liverpool Bay and Irish Sea was founded in 1891. It was originally designed by Tom Morris Senior and later altered by Alec Herd, Harold Hilton and James Braid. It has hosted many great events including the qualifying rounds of the Open. Apart from this, it also played host to the qualifying rounds of Amateur championship in 1995 and 2000. The golf course at the club runs through majestic dunes and flat land making it an interesting place to tee for golfers from all over the world.
The club has a rich history and Dr Frank Stableford who was a member of the club in 1914 developed the Stableford system of points. The first competition based on this new system of points was played in 1932. The club is also famous for its fine collection of paintings including that of the legendary golf player, Bobby Jones. After winning the open at 1930, Bobby Jones had agreed to sit for the painting at the request of an artist at Wallasey.
Membership
Membership is open for the senior section and junior. The senior section founded in 1966 was originally open for members over 60. Nowadays the age for senior section has been reduced to 55 and it is similar to other golf clubs in the area. Competitions are held on Monday and they are played over 14 holes. Matches with other clubs are also played over 18 holes.
Juniors are also encouraged to play at the club and they are in the age group of 8 - 18. A core group of members mentor the junior section at a reduced rate. Local competitions for juniors are held on Sunday afternoon and on weekdays after school. The competition dates are published on the notice board and website.
Dress code
The following dresses are not allowed on the golf course: cargo style trousers, denim jeans, beach wear, round neck T-shirts and training shoes and sandals. On the course, conventional golf wear needs to be worn and the shirt needs to be tucked in. Caps, outdoor coats and golf shoes are not allowed in the lounge and dining area.
Clothing and shoes are not allowed to be changed in the parking area. Members need to ensure that the guests accompanying them also follow these rules. If any member is found in breach of these rules, they may be challenged by the management of Wallasey Golf Club. The conventional dress needs to be worn throughout the club house.
2014 Open championship
The dates for the Open championship to be held in 2014 have been announced and bookings for visitors are open to play in the golf course. The championship is to be held from 14th - 20th July and visitors need to pay a fixed fee for playing on weekdays and weekends. The golf course can be easily accessed by rail and road.
