For those fantasy baseball players who picked up or drafted Mike Trout and/or Bryce Harper, chances are you currently sit in playoff contention for your league. As great as both rookies have been, they are still just that: rookies. So can they keep it up?
Mike Trout has been considered as a possible AL MVP ever since he was recalled early on in the season. The Angels were struggling until the outfielder became an everyday player. Now he is hitting for average, showing some decent power, playing outstanding defense and swiping enough bags to provide value in that category as well.
So far, Trout has not been slowed down as teams are getting a second look at him. He seems to be a very safe bet down the stretch, and he will get plenty of at-bats as the Angels attempt to make the playoffs.
As far as Bryce Harper is concerned, fantasy baseball owners should be a bit more concerned. He is striking out more than he was early on in the season. While his power has been there, some people expected him to hit home runs with a little bit more frequency. What people really tend to overlook though is the fact that he is all of 19 years old. It is almost impossible for a player like him to not go through some peaks and valleys.
It seems as though fantasy baseball owners have long debated if you should trade talented young players for proven veterans, or ride the talent that put you in position to win the title. Harper and Trout are not going to win a league on their own, so they aren't going to lose it either. It would be hard to find a fair trade this late into the season, but if the right player is offered, jump all over it. Remember that unless you are in a keeper league, fantasy baseball is not about potential. It is about the right now. As of right now, both Trout and Harper have the talent to play every day for a fantasy baseball team. If they can do it for two more months, there will be a lot of happy owners.
