On behalf of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) minister of Aviation, Fidelia Njeze has issued notices to various air carriers to pay all the payables against them for last three years. Some of the defaulter carriers have started negotiations on the settlements of the debts with the authorities.
Most of the airlines operating in the country had not deposited Terminal Navigational Charges (TNC) and En Route Air Charges applied to both domestic and international operations to the agency. The amont has reached to billions of naira.
A memo issued to various airlines shows that all the defaulter airlines to pay back the amount outstanding even in installments that were convenient to them.
Arik Air agreed to pay its outstanding amount in 36 installments, first to be paid in July 2010. This air carrier has to pay $1, 880m on the international and N605, 324m on the domestic routes for TNC. Air Nigeria had liabilities of $1.2m and N299, 758, 609m on international domestic routes. The authorities of Air Nigeria have also agreed to pay N230m in 23 monthly installments.
Others defaulter air carriers include IRS, N53m; Aero, $29m (international), domestic en route, N137m and TNC, N109m; Chanchangi, N88.2m; Dana, N10.4m; Associated Air, N19.2; Bellview, N10.7m; Dornier Air, N3.4; Capital Air, N3.2m, Caverton Helicopters, N1.3m; Overland, N13. 3m, Pan African/Briscoe, N902, 310; and Wings Aviation, N23, 575. IRS Airlines excused to pay for the domestic en route, due to an ongoing court hearing for the suspension of the charges, but agreed to pay N500, 000 monthly on the TNC dues.
However, Air Nigeria had started its own services with N5million monthly. Aero settled for N3.4m monthly, spread over 36 months. Chanchangi negotiated to deposit N2.4million monthly in 36 installments. Dana Air requested to pay N2.6m per month for four months. Associated Air agreed to pay N535 , 000 monthly over 36 months, while Bellview Airlines pledged to pay N1 million monthly for 11 months. Pan African/Briscoe agreed to pay its debts in four months at N225, 577 monthly; Wings Aviation, N23, 575 within a month; Overland, N251, 644m monthly for 36 months and Dornier Air, N514, 966 monthly for four months.
