Teaching art to kids might be great fun and very interesting but it is equally difficult. For one thing teachers need to have lot of patience while teaching kids to draw. Art class for kids teaches kids how to draw, use a brush to paint, how to mix colours, and all other techniques. The projects that the kids learn in these art classes will also be very interesting and engrossing. Teaching the same project repeatedly to each batch can be monotonous for the teachers. There are some common mistakes that teachers can do without their knowledge while teaching kids the art lessons. For instance it can be as simple as washing brushes for the students when they are done with the class. Teach the children at the beginning of the course how to do it, and then allow them to do it on their own after that. If you keep assisting children in doing this, they will never learn. Sometimes teachers could use templates to save the time. Using templates too often is only going to stunt the creativity in children.
Give them their space to do the creative work without the use of templates, this will allow the children to open up to their creativity. Allow them to organize their supplies at the beginning of the class and then clean up after the end of the class. If you assist them because they are slow in doing it, you are only making it worse for them and they will never learn their responsibilities fully.
One of the most common mistakes teachers do in art class for kids is empty praising. It is very necessary to encourage children to develop their creativity, but this should be done in such a way that there is some knowledge that is being imparted along with the praise. For example, praise that the whole class was very attentive and well behaved and you liked it or that the beautiful orange colour of the sun looks wonderful in contrast to the blue sky or something like that. This gives an insight that they are on the correct path.
Another common mistake that teachers do is correcting the work that the students have done. Many teachers tend to do it. They just use the pencil or brush and add a few touch up strokes which is going to make the work look more pleasing. Although the teacher is teaching the children the technique of doing the work more precisely, but never do the mistake of working on a students work. This way the students become dependent on the teacher and it can get confusing and unsettling for the kids to finish the project without the teacher's help. They will keep waiting for the teacher to come and finish it. Instead encourage them by telling them to observe the painting and think hard what can be done to make it better and more appealing. That way you are encouraging the children to think hard and open up their creativity.
Please do not repeat the same project every year. Teachers tend to feel it is monotonous and there is lack of challenge in teaching kids the same thing every year. If there are different projects, it keeps the teachers occupied and also they have the motivation to teach children better. Also it is wrong to teach children a new project without the teacher trying it once. Once you have tried it, you will come to know where the children can go wrong and you will find new ways to fix their problem without you directly helping them do it. Do not try to hide your mistakes while you are trying to teach the children how to draw. Its okay if you have to rub the drawing a few times, it only shows the children that they can always correct their mistakes and they need not have the guilt that they got it all wrong.
