Salt in Wieliczka was mined first probably in the thirteenth century. Until 1772 the Wieliczka salt mine belonged to the society called "A»upa Krakowska". Later, when "A»upa Krakowska" was in the annexation of Austria, it was divided and salt mines in Wieliczka and Bochnia were working separately.
