Reasons Why You Haven ??t Visited Costa Rica

Beginning in the 1980's, Costa Rica began seeing a steady influx of international tourism. Last year alone, the country saw over two million visitors, and analysts expect that number to continue increasing every year. By now, anyone who's fortunate enough to afford overseas travel, or to take the vacation time to do so, has. But if you haven't, I know why.

1.)You Hate Nature

Covering only .03% of the Earth’s surface, the small country of Costa Rica is home to 6% of the entire world’s biodiversity. Over 25% of the country is preserved by national parks and reserves such as mangroves, rain forests, jungles, coral reefs, and wetlands. Throughout the year, humpback whales migrate to Costa Rica making it a prime location for whale watching. But you hate that sort of thing.

2.)Untouched Beaches Make You Angry

As a leader in environmental sustainability, Costa Rica prohibits development within 50 meters of the highest tide on either coast, making for some of the most beautiful, untouched beaches in the world. The beaches are completely surrounded by wild jungle, preserving the natural beauty and wildlife dependent in these areas. What could make you more angry?

3.)Pura Vida Vibes Keep You from Stressing

Pura Vida literally translate to “pure life” and Ticos take it seriously. Pura Vida is used as a way to say hello, goodbye, how are you, thank you, don’t worry, and anything else. Along with the expression comes the energy urging you “Don’t worry, be happy”. People here are happier than any country in the world. Not even your toxic stress can wound them up. If you think otherwise, come visit!

4.)You Prefer Obnoxious Noise to Peace & Quiet

Ticos love their peace and quiet. It’s an unwritten law that residential areas are quiet by 10 pm. No one forces you to go to bed, but respect the Earth’s pattern and allow the nocturnal animals to take over.

5.)Adventure is for Losers

From zip lining to rafting, hiking to exploring, there’s something here for everyone. Except you. Waterfalls are hidden along volcano trails, and repelling down definitely isn’t your style. No matter where in the country you visit, you’re sure to come across an adventure tour that excites. Or not.

6.)Wildlife Belongs in the Wild

In Costa Rica, humans and every other species that calls this land home, coexist. Hummingbirds buzz right into your open window, sloths smile as you past them, lizards tan beside you on the beach, and community dogs will accompany you home. Wildlife does belong in the wild. But you probably don’t.

7.)There’s Way Too Many Things to Do

Restaurants, bars, dancing, paddle boarding, language schools, hiking, swimming, surf schools, national parks, etc. There’s way too many things to do. How can someone even decide with that many options? Maybe it’s better to refrain from everything.

8.)Plantains Make You Nauseous

Valid. If plantains make you nauseous, maybe you shouldn’t come to Costa Rica. They’re everywhere. Fried, sweet, with beans, or cheese. For breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They’re on the menu at every local family soda, they’re on the menu at a sit-down, full-service restaurant. They’re on the trees, at the supermarkets, sold at La Feria. Stay away.

9.)You are Petrified of Volcanoes (even if they’re dormant)

Costa Rica is home to a variety of volcanos, and at least 6 remain active. Arenal, Costa Rica’s most popular volcano site, has been dormant since 2011. But not even that will persuade you to witness the majestic landscape.

10.) Sloths Make You Cry

Sloths, well-known for their slow activity, and plastered smiling faces, make you cry. How can something be so happy when they move that slow?! It’s so sad.
