What Is Most Effective Treatments For Hair Loss
If you're experiencing hair loss, you're not alone. About a quarter of all men begin to go bald by the time they're 30, and about two-thirds are either bald or have thinning hair by age 60. Hair loss is something most men secretly 'fear' but hope it may never actually occur. After all, thinning hair and baldness is something that kids use to identify the elderly, despite the fact that the process can begin before 20 years of age! A good head of hair is associated with youth, virility and attractiveness, so when hair loss occurs it can come as something of a shock.
When considering hair loss treatment for men, it is important to understand the life cycle of this part of the body. One hair grows for two to six years. In that time, it grows less than a half an inch per month. The hair may go through a resting phase, but nine out of ten hairs are in the growing stage at one time. When a hair goes into a resting stage, it lasts about two to three months, then it falls out. A new one begins growing in its place. This cycle of growth and loss is normal, and as long as the hair is replaced as quickly as it is lost, baldness does not occur. Excessive hair loss can come from several factors. One is an illness or surgery that causes physical stress to the body.
Another reason for hair loss is problems with hormones. Male and female hormones, called androgens and estrogens, can get out of balance.
Is there anything a man can do to combat hair loss? There are a number of different hair loss treatments available for men.
1. Minoxidil (Regaine) is found to be effective in about 25% of men with baldness on the crown. Applied twice a day in a cream the hair growth only occurs as long as it is used. Minoxidil was originally approved to treat high blood pressure. Side effects are unusual but Regaine should not be used by people with a history of heart problems, sudden weight gain, chest pains, fainting, or rapid heartbeat.
2. Propecia has been available since 1997 for treating male pattern baldness, and is the first drug available in pill form. It has proven to be much more effective than Rogaine. There are some potentially serious side effects, however. Propecia can cause impotence, decreased sexual desire, and pain in the testicles. Contact your doctor if these side effects don't go away, or if you develop a rash, itching, hives, or swelling in your lips or face.
3. There is a modern hair loss treatment known as laser therapy. Laser therapy sessions can take place at your doctor's office, and you can also purchase your own "laser therapy comb" (LLLC) device. There are some dubious devices on the market that don't work, but there is also one has been approved by the FDA. Make sure you have a consultation with your doctor before purchasing or using one. In the case of laser therapies, a low level laser light is supposed to stimulate the hair follicles into producing hair.
4. Although easier said than done you should keep your life as stress free as possible. Stress is linked to hair loss. And exercise is a great way to a) help reduce stress, and b) to lower the hormone levels responsible for hair loss and increase those that to help prevent it!
