Natural - Looking Dentures
Having complete dentures will help with chewing as well as support one's facial structure and improve speech. Many people dream of having perfectly straight and milk-white teeth. But if you have dentures made to look that way, the result is false-looking tooth. Dr. Bart Kreiner runs his own dental firm, Dr. Kreiner Family Dentistry, in Bel Air, Maryland. Here, he explains how more natural-looking dentures are really the way to go.
If you lost all your teeth, you would have a choice to replace them: Do you want perfectly white teeth that are set ideally straight, or do you want ones that look more natural? Most people think that they would like perfectly straight and bright white dentures, but it's not really a good idea. In real life, teeth are neither ideally white nor perfectly straight. So I always tell my patients that if they want their dentures to be natural-looking, then they need to select a color and a type set which are natural in appearance.
I first try with the artificial teeth set in wax for my patients. So that the patients can actually see what they will look like when the teeth are in their mouth. And they will know what they are getting before they make a decision on the final set. They are not able to chew food in them, as the dentures are in wax. But they are able to see what they will look like in their mouth. The best part is that we can change the teeth according to patients' needs. We can change it if they don't like the color. We can make them a little crooked if they are too straight. We can make them a bit straighter if they are a little crooked. After the patients are fully satisfied, the artificial teeth will finally be processed and made. And the patients will get exactly what they want.
Sometimes we have a look at patients' pictures for their old smile. If there is something unique about the smile, we will match it up closely. For example, if one tooth was crooked and overlapped the other, we can try to recreate that by making one artificial tooth crooked and a little overlapping the adjacent tooth. If there was a space between their two incisors, we can keep a space between their dentures.
We also help some people make their dreams of having milk-white and straight teeth come true. They prefer this as they were not satisfied with their original teeth. Now they have an option and would like to pay for it. They want super-white teeth that are ideally straight. Unfortunately, when the final dentures have been set, they don't look natural.
