Canines Used in Bed Bug Detection? It Is True!
Dogs just got another great reason for bearing the title Man's Best Friend. They have proven invaluable in our fight against bed bugs. They really take the guesswork out of bed bug detection and consequently, eradication.
These specifically trained dogs have come at a crucial time since the last couple of decades have seen a steady rise in bed bugs. Some people would play the roles of these dogs small arguing that with a little time and effort, anyone can detect at least one bed bug. What these kinds of people do not know is that even the professionals in bed bug extermination services have about 15% to 20% (tops!) success rate of spotting bed bugs whereas our loyal and unbiased canine friends have a 90% to 97% success rate of detecting bed bugs. That fact alone should sway any sceptic into giving the dogs their due respect at least.
There are things that you, as the client, have to keep an eye out for those who allege that they have bed bug sniffing dogs. There have been cases where the client was fed a lot of verbal accolades regarding their bed bug sniffing canines where in fact it was a dog that was trained to do a few house tricks such as sit and whine which the house owner than interprets as a sure sign of the presence of bed bugs. Home owners should be suspicious when the exterminator brings in a dog and asks the owner to vacate the house during the inspection to avoid confusing the dog with strange scents and all. Always ask for proof of the dog's special skills such as training certifications or any kind of license.
Dogs are naturally gifted with a sense of smell that is a thousand times more sensitive to that of any human being. Since bed bugs can hide virtually everywhere such as behind walling, spaces in furniture pieces as well as any small crevices within the room. Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds are the two most common breeds of dogs that are used for sniffing out bed bugs. That doesn't mean other dogs are not suited for the task at all. These two are the most common mainly due to their smarts while other dogs just need a little more time to get the same skills.
These trained dogs are excellent for sniffing out the source of the bed bugs thereby allowing the exterminators to get to the root cause of the problem and work from there. This ensures total extermination. You would only need to employ one extermination service that use bed bug sniffing dogs because of their accuracy instead of multiple bed bug exterminators who do not have these trained dogs. The higher cost of these dog services is clearly offset by the absence of any follow-up operation which cannot be paralleled by those who do not have bed bug sniffers.
