Foot Pain - Ugg Boots - Are Uggs boots good for you feet?
Shoe fashion can always surprise Podiatrists and one of the latest styles to cause some concern is the UGG boot. This Australian product has recently proved to be incredibly popular for almost all work and social occasions and many people feel very comfortable in the fur lining, especially during the winter months. This can have positive health benefits because wearing UGG's insulates the lower leg and feet and this can help to prevent chilling of the skin and painful chilblains. Some of those with poor circulation in the feet will also benefit by maintaining a constant temperature in the feet and so avoid pain. The toe box area of the UGG boot also does provide more room for the toes than many other boot styles.
The problems seem to start when using UGG boots to walk a significant distance. Once we learn to walk as toddlers, our feet become quickly accustomed to wearing shoes as we insulate our feet from the ground. This obviously protects our feet from painful injury but can also affect how well the foot works to support itself. Well designed shoes will offer some stability to the heel area and allow the joints of the foot to work normally. This combination of strength and flexibility allow our feet to feel comfortable when we walk. The UGG boot design does not always provide the stability that some people need and the heel often rolls towards the inner edge of the boot. This can be a sign that the arches of the feet are weakening and may be at risk from a strain injury and discomfort and pain are often the result. If this does happen, using a Footmedics Activ orthotic can help restore the foots natural position within the boot or placing a Stayfresh Fleece Insole in a deeper standard shoe can provide the insulation required in colder weather.
It is important to understand that these problems do not affect us all and the majority of UGG boot wearers are not necessarily likely to develop painful symptoms. However, those whose feet already have support problems are likely to be made worse and it may take a while before the discomfort shows. Using UGG boots to keep your feet warm makes sense but walking longer distances in them may give you more than you bargained for. Sacrificing comfort for style can come at a price.
Popular UGG-Style boot bad for your feet
The popular UGG-style boot is renowned for its comfort. But some doctors worry that the fashion staple could cause serious foot pain in the long run. So some podiatrists across the country are telling UGG boot lovers to watch their steps.
"It may feel cushiony; it may feel comfortable, but it doesn't mean they're getting the necessary arch support that a foot needs to function effectively," said Dr. Rock Positano of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
Boots Remain Popular
Such advice hasn't stopped UGG boot lovers like Tammy Mudd of Wilmington, Ohio, from donning the boot with a suede exterior and sheepskin lining. Mudd, 28, has seven pairs of the footwear in her closet and rarely takes them off, saying she would take any color or style of UGG boot because she loves them so much.
