Healing Power Of Music
If you experienced a day filled with running from one place to the next, one errand to the next, one meeting to the next, imagine a place where all your troubles can melt away. A place where the stressors of the day are nonexistent. A place where peace and tranquility are norm.
It seems that the healing power of music, over body and spirit, is only just starting to be understood, even though music therapy is not new. For many years therapists have been advocating the use of music - both listening and study - for the reduction of anxiety and stress, the relief of pain. And music has also been recommended as an aid for positive change in mood and emotional states.
Stress has been linked to a growing number of illnesses. Attached to all negative events there remains a direct connection to the emotions that either occurred at the moment of the event or shortly thereafter. Each emotional event can present us with an opportunity to make a choice of how we perceive that event.
But the funny thing is if we can acknowledge the actual pain that caused the disease in the first place, and we can come to terms with it being there then we wouldn't judge it, and we could examine and heal the disease from a spiritual perspective as well, which would aid the medical treatment.
There is evidence that sound has been used as a healing force for thousands of years. All ancient civilisations used sound for healing. There are many traditional cultures still surviving today that understand the remarkable healing power resulting from sound.
That night I sat in ICU and stayed near while my daughter slept and the music played. The next morning we received a call from the doctor telling us that we would be able to take our daughter home that afternoon. He said that he was amazed how my daughter had recovered so quickly! We were ecstatic! The next day we went to take our daughter home. The nursing staff was amazed that she was going home so early and that literally overnight her condition dramatically improved! They all wanted to get a CD and were convinced that the music had helped produce such a positive effect. Even I had to admit that I was amazed!
Native American flute music has a special appeal, as do many chants and songs from the "old ones" whose wisdom comes down to us through generations of practitioners and healers.
Pure science, delving into the mysteries of the mind and how music affects specific areas and functions of the brain, opens the door to many avenues of exploration in treating and curing various diseases and conditions. The metaphysical journey to balance and harmony via healing music is being translated into a physical science. Music as a complex form of sound vibrations is being studied as a way to communicate with those who cannot speak, and even with those who cannot hear. There are therefore many areas to be explored in discovering the healing power of music.
