Whats The Catch IN Fly Fishing
Most people who live indoors or those far from a body of water (inland or otherwise)has this recurring question playing in their mind: Why do people in movies, print media, and yes, in real life, seem to enjoy fly fishing? What is it and where is the enjoyment there?
For those who know so little about fly fishing like I do, a little research went a long way and has made me to understand that fly fishing is a form of recreational fishing or fishing for pleasure and sometimes for competition. You say recreational? Is wading in water, waiting for fish to catch your artificial bait and staying under the heat of the sun recreational? What if there is an alligator lurking somewhere upstream and just waiting for bait- your foot? Ah, the fears of the uninitiated!
Fly fishers will laugh at these arguments because the benefits and enjoyment of fly fishing far outweigh the odds. Some will even tell you that they get spiritual renewal from this recreation and I have to agree with them because communing with nature is really a great spiritual boost, a sure way to de-stress too. Unless of course you don't catch any fish in which case you end up hyper stressed than when you start, which is most unlikely considering that spawning season is already in.
I have a friend who is an avid fly fisher and he never misses a week without going fishing even just once. Going out to fish seem to fill him with some excitement and anticipation and he always comes back from a fishing session, if you could call it that, rejuvenated and reinvigorated. He prepares so thoroughly before going out to fish. He gets the best fishing rod, fishing line and fishing reel. Getting the best of these fly fishing accessories is a sort of a status symbol too. I guess he gets the best not because he wants to get in line with those in the higher social strata but because the best really are good for the long haul. And maybe they get the best fish too. This is just a theory, of course.
Talking seriously about these accessories, fly fishing does require that we get a special fishing line and also an especially long fishing rod since the artificial lures that are being used are weightless. Yes, the lure used in fly fishing is artificial, that's one thing we should know. Live and dead baits are out. The rods have to be strong too. These has evolved to some sort of strong bamboo which is highly flexible so that when the rod is thrown back and arched to get the fly to the farthest distance where the hatch is, the rod won't break. The fishing reel, a device that stores, retrieves and pays out the line has also improved as the years have gone by and they have now better drag to haul in larger fish.
Fly fishing-what is it and where is the enjoyment there? Go get yourself a fishing line, rod and reel and talk to an avid friend, go with him, and you'll surely get hooked!
