Guitars have been around for ages and show no signs of its popularity diminishing. It is an easy instrument to carry around making it perfect for impromptu jam sessions with friends. The original wooden or acoustic guitars have been joined by bass guitars and electric guitars.
If you are planning on buying your first guitar it can at first seem like a daunting task. Reading up on the instrument and knowing what types are available is always a good start in your pre-purchase planning. Once you have decided what kind of guitar you want, research on the type of brands that you can get, such as Gibson Les Paul guitars, Mason guitars or Gitane acoustic guitars, just a few of the many options available.
Armed with this knowledge you can now set off to the music store to check out firsthand the instrument. Of course, you can always do more in depth research if you so wish to, but it is not strictly necessary as quality music stores usually employ people who are knowledgeable about the instruments and as such you can always ask them for advice on what to purchase.
What is important though is not to be impulsive. Unlike shopping for clothes or shoes, when buying a guitar you have to be patient and smart. Remember, you may not be able to actually buy the instrument on the very first day you go shopping. It is always best to visit a few stores and get different opinions before making your final choice. Feel the instruments and see which feels most comfortable to you as your experience with your guitar will be very personal. Do not be afraid to strum the guitar at a reasonable volume to actual experience its acoustics so that you are very sure of the quality of the guitar you plan on buying. Try to play the same tune on multiple guitars so that you will be able to note the difference in tone and then select the one that appeals to you most.
Whatever you do, do not rush. Take your time and if necessary multiple days before actually making your purchase. It would also be advisable to browse online guitar shops that have many options on offer, so that you will know what you like and would like to check out once you get to the shop.
