Flat Screen Centre Analysis of The Samsung UE32d5000 Led TV
initially it is an edge-lit LED effort from Samsung's midrange 5000 series, which also includes the 27-inch Samsung UE27D5000, 37-inch Samsung UE37D5000, 40-inch Samsung UE40D5000 and the 46-inch Samsung UE46D5000.
Design wise it looks a lot refined than its bargain price tag should suggest. The thin black bezel is straddled by a transparent plastic rim that is more attractive than you may think, while the table stand also uses transparent plastic for the neck and around the flat base, completing a very sleek and modern look.
What's more, the nature of the LED flat screen has allowed Samsung to squeeze the UE32D5000's depth down to a wafer-thin 30mm, which, aside from being a fairly impressive achievement, makes the Samsung UE32D5000 perfect for wall mounting with a Samsung TV wall bracket. To assist with wall mounting Samsung has very kindly placed all the connections facing sideways on the back of the Samsung UE32D5000.
There's a surprisingly wide selection of sockets too, given the price and amount of space available on the rear - you get four HDMI inputs, component/composite video input, 15-pin D-Sub PC input with separate audio input and an RGB scart input. You'll also find optical digital audio and headphone outputs, a common interface slot for adding pay TV channels and two USB ports.
Unfortunately the Samsung UE32D5000 doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi, so if you want a wireless web connection you'll need to aquire Samsung's optional dongle and connect it to one of those USB ports, failing that then there is the Ethernet port to fall back on. Wi-Fi is just one of the features omitted from the Samsung UE32D5000. Another is Smart Hub, Samsung's newest internet content portal. This is a disapointment given the diverse range of video, music and social networking sites it offers, however this is also excusable given the price tag.
Picture
As for the picture, the Samsung UE32D5000 is driven by Samsung's Hyper Real Engine, reinforced by Clear Motion 100Hz processing to tidy up that old LCD problem of motion blur using a combination of the Samsung UE32D5000 chipset, panel and backlight. Meanwhile, Wide Colour Enhancer Plus reveals even the gentlest tones.
Black objects also convince - the Samsung UE32D5000 is capable of producing a believable black tone when needed, free from that misty grey haze that can blight LED flat screen TV sets.
And if you are a fan of sports and console gaming (as I am), you will will be pleased to know that the Samsung UE32D5000 has smooth motion processing, keeping image lag at bay and maintaining the visibility of small, rapidly-moving objects. There are hints of pixel shimmering when the camera moves very quickly and a slight drop in sharpness, but it does avoid horrible picture break-up and judder - which is a incredible achievement given that some flat screen TV sets costing twice as much lose their mind when the picture gets too busy.
Standard-definition pictures feel very impressive too, showing the usual signs of MPEG blocking in places, but slick upscaling combined with great brightness and colour handling, make them look generally vibrant.
Sound
The Samsung UE32D5000 and its impossibly thin dimensions do raise the issue of how it manages to make any sound at all, but it does - and what a sound. The built-in 20W speakers produce a thin, boxed-in sound, as is all to common with flat screen TV sets but it goes surprisingly loud, and does so without offending the ears. It doesn't really get to the heart of films, but to do that with any flat screen TV you really need to purchase a DVD or Blu-ray Home Theatre System.
And if you're disapointed with the sound out of the box you can improve its quality by having a fiddle with the extensive sound modes on board, which include Music, Movie, Clear Voice and Amplify presets, as well as SRS TruSurround HD, SRS TruDialog and even an equaliser that lets you alter individual frequencies.
Value
The Samsung UE32D5000 may not be filled with smart features like Samsung's premium sets, but the high quality of the picture, coupled with exciting features like DLNA networking and USB media playback, still make the Samsung UE32D5000 feel like exceptionally good value for around 400.
