Hong Kong Fun Outdoors
The hot temperatures will always deter people from doing many outdoor activities in Hong Kong during the summer months, but as autumn takes over during September, that should be your cue to begin savouring more of the city's pursuits outside. If you want to explore the Special Administrative Region a bit more, here are some options for you, and they're all outdoors.
The Peak: You can get there by taxi, bus or tram, so it's pretty convenient whatever your preference. For a more scenic route, take the tram (technically a funicular as it's on an incline), but only do so if you have lots of money and time. It is well known for the glamorous view of busiest part of Hong Kong surrounding the Victoria Harbour. Whilst you're up there, you can go for a walk in the park and trail, where you will also find the best spots for taking photos for free. Just make sure you bring a tripod, and don't use flash if you're there at night.
Yuen Po Street Bird Garden: Before the crippling Avian Flu caused so much grief for Hong Kong, there was a street full of bird stalls. Fortunately, it has now been moved by the government, and can now be found at this Bird Garden. There are over 70 stalls found here, crammed into 3,000 square metres, making it possibly one of the busiest bird areas in the world. Seeing as you're in the area, follow your nose to Flower Street nearby, which you'll find easy on the eye and fragrantly pleasant. Of course, if you have hay-fever, it might be best to skip this last part.
Palm Beach: Eat, play and sleep outdoors here. Found on Lantau Island, you can cook up a great barbecue with friends, and then sleep with them in their teepee village. If you're not doing either, enjoy the superb Cheung Sha beach, where you'll also be able to do some surfing and other watersports too. A word of warning though, do remember to set up your mosquito net properly. For those who are particularly adventurous, you can try catching your own clams for dinner too, just like the locals do.
