If you rent your home chances are your lawn will be taken care of by your landlord/council. However, if you own your home you arne't so lucky. Keeping your lawn in good condition can be a very difficult job and although we can show you how to "cut" grass we can help you 'choose the right tools for the job'.
The two main areas you need to asses when looking for a lawn mower is, your size of lawn and how often you will need to mow the garden/lawn(for our American readers). The wider the cut the less time it will take to cut your lawn although if you have a small garden, say 15ft x 15ft, you aren't going to spend 2000 on a huge ride on with a 28" cut and if you have a 1000acre garden (Lucky You!) then buying a small lawnmower will only lead to foul language. So it is very important to get the correct size and here are a few rules that may help you:
Small Garden (upto 15ft x 15ft): 13" to 16"
Medium Garden (upto 80ft x 80ft): 16" to 23"
Large Garden (Rich People Size): 31" to 53" Ride On
So you no what size but what about the 'how often you will cut' variable? Well, its simple. If you cut your grass once per year then buy cheaper. If you are an avid gardener then buy bigger, more expensive Lawnmowers.
You can also get a few optional extras that are really down to taste. You can get a roller lawnmower, which is basically a lawnmower with the two back wheels replaced with a heavy roller. This will give you a nice striped cut(Be careful this requires flat lawn and an up and down pattern when cutting). You can also get lawn mowers that are self propelled or hand propelled. Self propelled mowers only require you to hold down the engagement for them to start moving and hand propelled requires you to push and pull the lever.
One last point to consider is location. If you, for example, stay in the desert then why did you read this far down. If you stay, like us, in Glasgow, where rain is of high probability then you should consider getting a bigger stronger lawnmower.
