Properly Maintaining Your RC Helicopter
While it is true that flying an RC Helicopter can be fun and rewarding, it is also very important that you take great pains to ensure that it is properly maintained because they are expensive, and neglecting even the most basic maintenance routine can cost you even more in the long run.
Here are a few basic general maintenance tips that you should do on your RC helicopter:
Canopy Maintenance:
The canopy of your toy helicopter should always be detached and checked for defects and cracks routinely, and depending on how much you use it, you should check your canopy at least every 8-10 hours of flying time. Vibrations and rough landings can also have very negative effects on your helicopter, so be sure to avoid those.
Landing Gear:
Your RC helicopter' slanting gear can show signs of damage, stress, and normal wear and tear wherein the bolts can loosen. Tightening them properly can increase the overall life of the landing gear and the helicopter as a whole because it will ensure that your helicopter always lands safely.
Servo Tray:
The servo tray should never be cracked. So before any RC helicopter flight, make sure that your servo tray is in good working condition and that it is securely fastened to the fuselage.
Tail Boom:
You should note that the shaft of your RC helicopter like every other part of the craft can show signs of wear and tear over time. It is important to make sure that whenever you are bringing out your helicopter after a long time in the storage that the drive tension of the shaft is released.
Gear Box:
One of the most important parts of the RC helicopter is the gear box of the tail rotor. Remember to always disassemble it to ensure that each and every part of it is lubricated properly, and every loose screw is tightened.
Rubber Grommets:
A helicopter's servo is mounted to rubber grommets. These rubber grommets can dry over time and if used often. A light coating of petroleum jelly on those rubber grommets can prevent it from drying up.
Batteries:
As a general rule, ensure that your batteries are not over charged or discharged. The batteries should always be stored with a little charge (at least 50%) and during the winter season, always make sure that they are stored where they may be kept warm.
Servo Arms:
Cracks in the servo arms can cause serious damage to your helicopter while inflight. You should check them regularly so that they may be replaced when necessary and prevent any unnecessary crash.
Clevises:
The clevises of your helicopter must always be properly fastened and secured to the servo arms. Slipping a small amount of fuel tubing over the closed clevises can help in securing them properly.
Following these very easy maintenance tips will ensure that your favorite helicopter is able to stay in shape and you can enjoy flying it without any hassle. Your helicopter should come with a user manual and it will help if you follow the guidelines for maintenance for your helicopter because the maintenance guidelines may vary from model to model.
